They not only created a place for local inhabitants and travelers to escape the heat, but as water plays a special part in Hindu mythology, the stepwells became cool sanctuaries for bathing, prayer, and meditation. From a distance, this staircase gives off the appearance of actually being a traditional roller coaster, complete with curves, sharp turns and loops that would theoretically take passengers on quite a wild ride.
