Poplar is one of the most poplar trim woods used today. It is relatively inexpensive and is used extensively in track homes where builders want to offer the most square footage at the least possible price. Poplar is easy to stain and paint and works great for trim pieces like molding, and builders find it easy to work with. Poplar can also be an acceptable choice for stair builders, reducing the cost of what would otherwise be an expensive stairway. It is often used, but generally not recommended, for newel posts in high traffic areas because of its softness.
