If you’re looking to add that something extra to your stairs but you aren’t sure just what to do, consider adding something extra to your risers. Risers are often overlooked as a design opportunity, but when taken full advantage of, detailed risers can completely change the look of your stairs. So, before you give up and just add a carpet runner, here are some detailing ideas that will really help your stairs make a statement.

Decorative tiles. If you are a fan of the Spanish Revival style, elaborately tiled risers are perfect for you. The possible pattern combinations are limitless.

Stencils. You can find just about anything in stencil form these days. Chooses a design you like or try stenciling your family name on a riser to personalize your stairs.

If you want something less permanent, try wall decals on your risers. They stick well and peel right off when you’re over them. This is a great option for those who constantly want to switch things up.

If you have an artistic hand, try turning your stairs into a mural. Or, for those that may be lacking the artists touch, try painting the risers a solid color. Or for a funkier look, paint each riser a different color.

Try wallpaper. There are so many patterns to choose from and risers are an excellent place to showcase beautiful designs and patterns.

Decorative tape. There are a ton of different decorative tapes available from duct to washi. Tape can be used to create stripe patterns, chevron, or even polka dots.

Be creative. The possibilities are endless.
